Garry Ferguson was born during the thirties when his parents lived in Black Donald Mines, a village eventually razed to make way for the headwaters of a dam on the Madawaska River. He was raised in that area of the Madawaska Valley where his first jobs were in a lumber camp and on construction crews but at the age of eighteen left to join the RCAF. He left the Airforce to work as a civilian for the Canadian Navy in Montreal while at the same time serving in the Naval Reserves. After retirement from Air Canada, he served with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires at Lester B. Pearson Airport before returning, with wife Carol, to the live in the “Valley.” Well before the age of the television, a young Garry was fascinated by the tales of ghosts, hunting, scrappers, life in the logging shanties and of perilous log drives on the river told by old men at gatherings. His young mind readily absorbed the yarns and anecdotes that later formed storylines in much of his writings.
